Some car accidents are inevitable. Things like poor road conditions and inclement weather can sometimes make it impossible to avoid a fender-bender. But there are plenty of other instances in which a driver’s failure to properly maintain his or her vehicle results in an accident that easily could have been avoided.
When a car is registered, the driver is taking responsibility for that vehicle, meaning that it must be in good working order so it won’t be a hazard on the road. A car that is damaged or that isn’t functioning properly poses a danger to other drivers. Here are a few of the seemingly simple oversights that could lead to a potentially deadly accident.
Headlights and taillights
When driving at night or in poor weather conditions, a vehicle whose headlights or taillights aren’t functioning becomes virtually invisible and can cause an accident all too easily.
Brake lights
Similarly, if a car’s brake lights aren’t working, it can be difficult, if not impossible, to tell when it’s slowing down, which could cause you to rear-end it.
Turn signals
If a car’s turn signals aren’t working, you won’t be able to tell when it’s turning or changing lanes. For example, you could be going straight through an intersection, unaware that a car is about to make a left turn right into you.
Tire pressure
The pressure of a car’s tires should be neither too high nor too low. If it’s too high, less of the tire’s surface area will be touching the ground, the vehicle will bounce on the road, and traction and stopping distances will be reduced—all of which could result in a crash. If it’s too low, too much of the tire’s surface area will be touching the ground, the tire will wear out quickly, and the eventual tread separation could lead to a blowout and an accident.
Brakes
If a car’s brakes aren’t properly maintained, the driver may not be able to stop before colliding with another vehicle, particularly in instances that require quick action, such as abrupt traffic or bad weather.
Mirrors
A car with broken rear-view or side-view mirrors poses a threat because the driver will have blind spots and simply may not be able to see some of the other cars on the road.
